Foreword
Article Outline
Systemic hypertension is the most common cardiovascular disease in the USA. It is estimated that more than 60 million people have hypertension but only about 34% have their hypertension controlled by the JNC criteria. Correction of hypertension has beneficial patient outcomes in all adults, even in those in the 9th decade of life. In fact, hypertension is a worldwide disorder and is a major risk factor of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity.
Dr. Elliott is a nationally recognized expert in hypertension. He has prepared an extensive authoritative review with 179 references. It covers all aspects of hypertension, which includes among other aspects those of epidemiology, risk, pharmacologic therapy, and special situations. It is practical and will be of value to all those involved in the care of patients with hypertension.
The Editorial Board and I are grateful to Dr. Elliott for this excellent article.
