Foreword
Article Outline
Molecular biology is important and is having an impact in Cardiovascular Medicine. However, for most practitioners of clinical cardiology (in academics and in practice) it still remains an esoteric topic and a subject that is difficult to grasp and is perceived as not being of clinical value at present time. However, this is not correct.
In this issue, Dr Roberts, who is recognized as a world expert on this topic, has prepared a treatise on this subject with the help of his colleague, Dr Gollob, who also has considerable knowledge and expertise. This is very much a “primer” and includes a summary of the essentials of the DNA molecule and its application to genetics and molecular cardiology. They describe its application to genetics and molecular cardiology. The authors then describe its applicability to a few of the cardiovascular diseases. These include the cardiomyopathies (such as hypertrophic, dilated, and arrhtymogenic) and cardiac arrhythmias (such as long QT syndrome, drug-induced LQTS, Brugada, WPW, and atrial fibrillation).
The Editorial Board and I are grateful to Drs Roberts and Gollob for this excellent text and also to Richard Walsh, MD,* for his many valuable comments.
Richard A. Walsh, MD, is John H. Hord Professor of Medicine, Chairman, Department of Medicine, Physician-in-Chief, University Hospitals of Cleveland, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, OH.
