The introduction of percutaneous coronary intervention for obstructive coronary artery disease was a huge advance in the management of patients with this common disorder that accounts for a large part of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity.

The introduction of stents further improved patient outcomes and the use of drug-eluting stents has almost revolutionized the therapeutic options and beneficial patient outcomes.

In this issue of Current Problems in Cardiology, Drs. Salam, Suwaid, and Holmes have presented an exhaustive, critical, and up-to-date review of an extensive amount of data on this topic, which includes 377 references. The Editorial Board and I are grateful to the authors for their effort.

In addition to Dr. Smith of our Editorial Board, Dr. Eric Bates has provided valuable comments.

Eric R. Bates, M.D. is Professor, Internal Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI.
